Adventure Ready Heritage Is Refined in the 2025 Toyota 4Runner

“The remarkable adaptability and power of the new 4Runner perfectly completes the tale of our truck family,” stated Dave Christ, general manager and vice president of the Toyota group. “This sixth-generation model offers a cool new look and incredible features, while retaining the rugged style and capability our customers love about this icon of adventure.” In the forty years it has been on sale, we have sold over three million of these.

Robust Base
Built entirely from the ground up, the 4Runner shares the robust TNGA-F global truck platform with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia from Toyota. This platform has a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link coil rear suspension system, all mounted on a high-strength boxed steel ladder frame.

Adopting the cutting-edge TNGA-F platform enhances the vehicle’s ride comfort and on-road handling in addition to adding strength. Even when seated in the accessible third row, passengers benefit from this enhanced platform. With the strong i-FORCE MAX drivetrain and upgraded frame, 4Runner can tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Changing the Heritage
According to Calty President Kevin Hunter, “identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation was the first step in designing the legendary 4Runner.” “The core of 4Runner’s go anywhere purpose is defined by its high lift, lean body, big tire, and rugged athleticism, which were inspired by Baja desert racing.”

This all-new 4Runner was designed by the Michigan-based CALTY design team. Designers looked to the past for inspiration, but they also considered the future. Though it is distinct in its own right, the all-new 4Runner was designed in tandem with the Tacoma and has certain familial similarities. Both seem tough yet functional, drawing inspiration from the desert racing setting. The iconic “wrap over” quarter glass was allowed to be reintroduced by designers as a tribute to the original and second generation 4Runners, and the roll-down rear window is still ingrained in the car’s design. The interior design team worked very hard to create the perfect space. They aimed to create a car that is simple to use and has a useful interface that perfectly combines contemporary sophistication and authentic capability. For instance, the 4Runner’s second-row tumble seats enhance the use of the cargo floor and add to the vehicle’s internal versatility.

i-FORCE Power Maxed
Two strong and effective turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder powertrains are available in this next chapter of 4Runner, including the i-FORCE engine, which produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. of torque mated to an automated eight-speed transmission. With the i-FORCE powerplant, the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited grades will all come standard.

The 4Runner i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum models, and available on the TRD Off-Road and Limited models. With this powertrain, which combines a 48-hp electric motor built into the eight-speed transmission with a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, the system can produce up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft of torque. The 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack powers the entire setup. of torque, making it the most potent 4Runner powerplant ever available.

Prepared for Trail
Rugged capability is synonymous with 4Runner. With its most recent iteration, 4Runner builds upon an amazing tradition by adding even more functionality. With a single button press, the recently introduced Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism expands suspension articulation. With the use of this function, the vehicle can flex while maintaining tire contact with the trail. With its maximum approach and departure angles of 32 degrees and 24 degrees, 4Runner sets the standard in yet another area. The Multi-Terrain Monitor system that is available helps the driver by enabling them to detect possible hazards on the central display.

2WD, full-time 4WD, and part-time 4WD versions of 4Runner will be available. In addition to Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with a high/low range, 2WD versions will include an automated limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). Four-wheel-drive variants will also have an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). For TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades, an electronic locking rear differential is standard. For i-FORCE MAX models, the Limited is available with a full-time four-wheel-drive system that includes a center locking differential; for Platinum grades, this configuration is standard.

There are now two modes for the Multi-Terrain Select system: 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. This has movable settings to assist in managing wheel spin on a range of surfaces, including sand, mud, and dirt. Additionally, 4Runner incorporates the quieter, new CRAWL Control feature, which serves as an off-road cruise control at low speeds that frees up the driver to concentrate on steering. The included electronically operated locking rear differential can help distribute power 50/50 to the rear wheels in situations where traction is severely limited. Another off-road function that assists drivers handle descents is called Downhill Assist Control. It works by restricting the vehicle’s speed.

A Mark for Everybody
4Runner increases the range of grades it offers, giving clients more options than ever before. There are nine different grades to choose from: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, TRD Off Road, and Trailhunter.

To enable owners to go even farther, the Trailhunter grade has been added to the lineup. Adventure seekers now have a turnkey option with a manufacturer-developed overland rig straight from the factory thanks to 4Runner’s capacity and durability, which have earned it a fan favorite among overlanders. Toyota worked with several off-road component manufacturers to improve the fit and finish even further. For instance, the Trailhunter will come equipped with an exclusive co-designed ARB Roof Rack and ARB’s Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs. Trailhunter has an extra two inches of front and 1.5 inches of rear suspension lift thanks to the OME shocks and 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires. Cleaner air is supplied to the standard i-FORCE MAX powertrain through a standard low-profile high-mount air inlet. Trailhunter provides extra safety in the form of high-strength steel skid plates and rock rails for true off-grid adventure capability. The Trailhunter also has a 20-inch integrated LED light bar that is accompanied with color-selectable RIGID LED fog lamps, as well as a heritage grill with bronze “TOYOTA” letters. There is a very strong 2400W AC inverter that supplies power to two places in the cabin and the back cargo area. With three conveniently located auxiliary switches pre-wired throughout the car, Trailhunter can be customized with various Toyota accessory items.

The first-ever Platinum grade of the 2025 4Runner offers buyers a premium, opulent experience together with all the features you would expect from a 4Runner. With its distinctive black exterior style features, heated second-row seats, standard tow tech package, Head-Up Display, and automatic rain-sensing wipers, the Platinum grade rises beyond the Limited grade.

newest technology
Toyota’s newest technology, including new screens, is added to 4Runner. The most recent Audio Multimedia system from Toyota is shown on a new 8-inch or optional 14-inch multimedia touchscreen. This system was created and developed by Toyota’s Connected Technologies division in Texas. The optional Qi wireless charging pad with higher power output fits nicely with the system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android AutoTM compatibility. There are two USB-C charging outlets for the front row and rear passengers, as well as a USB-C data and charging port built into the multimedia touchscreen on the right side. In lesser grades, a 7-inch gauge cluster is required; in higher grades, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is required.

For all grades, a push-button start Smart Key System is required. An optional Digital Key on select grades communicates with compatible cellphones to enable car entry and starting with an active Remote Connect trial or subscription (4G network dependant). Rather than handing someone a physical key, the Digital Key can also be remotely shared with others to grant more control over vehicle access.

Brave Decision
Toyota’s tough array of body-on-frame vehicles is beautifully rounded out with the all-new, young, and dynamic 4Runner. Customers now have five new vehicles to pick from, ranging from the full-size Tundra to the legendary Land Cruiser off-road vehicle. Customers now have more options when it comes to selecting a car that fits their busy lifestyles thanks to these automobiles. Their amazing capacity provides owners with the means to venture out and explore all the undiscovered beauties the globe has to offer. They are made to withstand nearly whatever the weather throw at them.

Safety Sense 3.0 Standard for Toyota
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a collection of proactive safety and convenience features, is included as standard equipment on all 2025 4Runner vehicles. Among the features of this suite are:

Pedestrian detection and pre-collision system
Traction Warning System with Steering Assistance
Dynamic Full-Speed Range Radar Cruise Control
Assistance with Lane Tracing
Assistance with Road Signs
High beams that operate automatically
Preemptive Roadside Assistance
The latest addition to Toyota Safety Sense is Proactive Driving Assist. When system operating parameters are fulfilled, Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) employs the camera and radar in the vehicle to help driving tasks such maintaining space between your vehicle and an oncoming car, pedestrian, or bike by gently applying brakes and/or steering. Additionally, PDA can offer gradual braking into corners. Proactive Driving Assist functions differently from the Pre-Collision System and should not be used in place of it.

The following new Toyota Safety Sense functions, including Proactive Driving Assist, have been included with TSS 3.0:

New system sensors have improved the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian detecting’s detecting capabilities. In certain situations, it receives improved intersection support with enhanced detection capacity. This system now has the capacity to detect motorcyclists in addition to pedestrians and bicyclists.
In addition to improved lane recognition that detects specific 3D objects, such as guardrails, that may be used to help define the lane, Lane Departure Alert will now offer steering assist.
In addition to offering Full-Speed Range functionality, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will get a fourth following distance setting, up from the previous three. More than one preceding car and vehicles in neighboring lanes can both be detected with enhanced vehicle detection. This facilitates the system’s ability to modify speed more smoothly and naturally, particularly when a driver changes lanes.
Enabling Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is necessary for the proper operation of Lane Tracing Assist. For the system to work, identifiable lane markings are necessary. Lane identification has improved over previous TSS generations, much like Lane Departure Alert. This method aids in increasing the gap between cars being passed in neighboring lanes in addition to lane centering. It functions by slightly altering the steering to deviate the car’s path while maintaining lane integrity.
One additional feature of Lane Tracing Assist is an Emergency Driving Stop System. Its purpose is to keep an eye on the driver’s inputs, including steering, and detect any lack of attention or responsiveness, which could occur in an emergency situation with a medical. If the driver ignores alerts to take control, this feature is meant to bring the car to a stop.
The purpose of Road Sign Assist is to recognize and identify various warning, yield, stop, do not enter, and speed limit signs. It then shows the sign’s icon on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
Apart from TSS 3.0, additional features that are available are Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) for additional peace of mind, which helps detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerts you with a visual and auditory warning; and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is intended to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes. Standard features also include Hill Start Assist Control (HAC).

Above Zero Vision
The newest hybrid vehicle in the lineup to bear the Beyond Zero emblem is the 4Runner, which is part of Toyota’s varied portfolio strategy toward a carbon-neutral future. Toyota will provide customers with a selection of 19 electric vehicles very soon. Toyota now offers more options than any other carmaker for consumers looking to lessen their carbon footprint: 15 hybrid vehicles, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle (BEV), and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai. These options are in addition to the Land Cruiser and Tacoma.

Restricted Warranty
All parts are covered by Toyota’s standard 36-month/36,000-mile new car warranty, with the exception of routine wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties protect the engine against rust perforation for 60 months without a mileage cap and the powertrain for 60,000 miles. When sold as new, hybrid-related components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the original date of first use for repairs necessary to address material or workmanship defects. The hybrid battery is transferrable throughout ownership and protected for 10 years/150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Along with standard factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, the 2025 4Runner also includes two years of unlimited mileage roadside assistance with ToyotaCare.

At our 13 manufacturing facilities, Toyota directly employs over 63,000 individuals in North America who have contributed to the engineering, design, and assembly of about 47 million vehicles and trucks. Car batteries for electrified vehicles will be produced at Toyota’s 14th factory in North Carolina by 2025. Toyota now has 27 electric alternatives, more than any other carmaker, and more vehicles on the road.
