TSS-P (Toyota Safety Sense) is a standard feature on all grades. “The big four-0,” as they’re known. With the 2023 model year, the Toyota 4Runner will be 40 years old… To commemorate the occasion, Toyota is releasing a unique 4WD-only 2023 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition. Toyota will make 4,040 of these special editions accessible in the United States, which is appropriate. Over the last four decades, the Toyota 4Runner has sold more than 4 million units worldwide, cementing its reputation as the go-anywhere SUV that’s equally at home on the road as on the trail.
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition will be offered in three colors: White, Midnight Black Metallic, and Barcelona Red Metallic. It will be based on the SR5 Premium grade. For All Seasons and Reasons, a 4Runner
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner lineup caters to a wide variety of preferences and requirements in a high-capability SUV. TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro are among the grades available. In all grades, the 4Runner emits a rough appearance while maintaining a classic SUV flair of its own. The SR5 and TRD variants come with 17-inch alloy wheels in three different designs: SR5 models have 6-spoke wheels, TRD Off-Road versions have 7-spoke wheels, and TRD Pro has flow-form matte black alloy wheels.
Color-keyed bumpers and overfenders, a hood scoop, and silver-colored painted front and rear bumper highlights differentiate the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium grades. The C-pillars are adorned with “TRD Off-Road” insignia. Only the Limited comes with a chrome-plated grille insert and chrome-finished exterior trim. LED fog lights are standard on all 4Runner models, with Rigid Industries LED fog lights on the TRD Pro.
The SUV that’s ready for adventure
The 4Runner’s tough-as-nails body-on-frame structure, which includes a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension, is the foundation of its innate strength. The 4Runner’s excellent ride quality is likewise built on a solid chassis.
A 270-horsepower DOHC 4.0-liter V6 engine with 278 lb.-ft. of peak torque provides enough of oomph for the 4Runner. The engine’s Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) helps maximize torque throughout the engine’s operating range, improving responsiveness in a wide range of driving situations.
When manually shifting is needed, the five-speed ECT-i automatic gearbox has a sequential shift mode. All 4Runner grades come with an integrated tow-hitch receiver and wiring harness as standard equipment, and all models can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds.
The 2WD 4Runners have a healthy 9.0 inches of ground clearance, while the 4WD vehicles have a whopping 9.6 inches. All 2WD 4Runner models come standard with an Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD), a traction control (TRAC) system that permits some wheel slippage to assist the vehicle in digging out of sand or snow, for example.
4×2 and Two Types of 4×4
A part-time 4WD system with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and a two-speed transfer case with selectable low-range boosts off-road performance. When it detects wheel slippage on terrain imperfections and slick areas, A-TRAC may assist maintain traction by dispersing driving force to any one tire in contact with the ground.
A full-time 4WD system with a Torsen center differential with locking capability and a three-mode, center console-mounted control is exclusive to the 4Runner Limited.
In typical driving scenarios, the system uses a 40:60 torque split, which it adjusts in reaction to slippage. The Torsen® differential also alters the torque split to 30:70 if the front wheels slide while the vehicle is turning. The distribution shifts to 53:47 if the rear wheels slide while the vehicle is turning.
Maximum Traction Technology (MTT)
The Toyota 4Runner comes with a number of off-road gear to meet a variety of objectives. The high-strength chassis and optional 4WD of the 4Runner are enhanced by a variety of innovations. Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) is a standard feature that gives you more control while accelerating from a stop on a steep hill. The technology assists the driver in transitioning from the brake pedal to the accelerator by temporarily holding the car immobile.
Downhill Assist Control is standard on Limited and SR5 versions equipped with 4WD (DAC).
This function improves low-speed descending controllability by assisting the driver in maintaining a steady modest speed and reducing wheel locking, enabling the driver to focus only on steering.
An electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) technology are available on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions.
CRAWL is meant to manage engine power and braking force to gently propel the vehicle forward or in backward at one of five driver-selectable low-speed settings when the transfer case is moved into low range.
In difficult terrain, this feature lets the driver to concentrate on steering rather than having to adjust the throttle or brake pedal.
As trail conditions change, the driver may adjust the vehicle using the standard Multi-Terrain Choose system, which uses a dial (placed above the CRAWL settings) to select a mode that best suits the current surface conditions. The system will alter the wheel slip control as a result.
On the list of off-road tech features on the 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro is the Multi-Terrain Monitor. The system uses strategically positioned cameras to allow the driver to inspect the surroundings on the path and detect any impediments that aren’t visible from the cabin. A premium Multi-information Display is also included in the TRD (and Limited) variants.
TRD Sport is a road-hugging vehicle.
The 4Runner TRD Sport grade, which debuted in 2022, focuses less on the trail and more on road-focused amenities while still maintaining style and flare. The 4Runner TRD Sport uses the Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension to improve on-road handling while focusing on daily comfort and road dynamics. When driving over uneven roads or cornering, the X-REAS system regulates the damping force of the shock absorbers. A center control absorber, shaped like a “X,” connects the shock absorbers on the vehicle’s opposite corners to assist minimize pitch and yaw by neutralizing opposing impulses.
The 4Runner TRD Sport comes with a 2-speed transfer case and either 2WD or part-time 4WD. The 4Runner TRD Sport replaces the SR5’s 17-inch wheels with machine-faced 20-inch wheels with Dark Gray accents, based on the SR5 grade. Notably, regardless of wheel size, all 4Runners come with a full-size spare tire.
Color-keyed details on the grille, rocker panels, and body sculpting, as well as the characteristic TRD-style hood scoop, a front spoiler, and black roof rails, give the TRD Sport its unique flair. TRD Sport upgrades the SR5’s fabric seats with power-adjustable black SofTex-trimmed seats on the inside. The front headrests have gray-colored TRD embroidered emblems, and the seats have distinctive gray-colored contrast stitching. The inside is finished off with TRD Sport floor mats and a standard TRD shift knob.
TRD Pro Lives Up To Its Name
Any Toyota truck or SUV with the TRD Pro label on it is the most off-road competent vehicle in its class. Solar Octane, White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Black color choices are available on the 2023 4Runner TRD Pro. Some of the less visible components are leading the way for off-road modifications, with specially tuned Fox internal bypass shocks and TRD-tuned coil springs providing an inch of front lift for increased trail-tackling performance. To sustain damping performance over difficult off-road terrain, the rear Fox shocks use piggyback-style remote reservoirs. The shock adjustment increases trail driving isolation and high-speed performance without sacrificing on-road comfort or steering responsiveness, giving you the best of both worlds.
The 4Runner TRD Pro, like previous Toyota TRD Pro cars, has a 1/4-inch thick metal front skid plate with red TRD branding. The TRD roof rack is only available from 4Runner. TRD Pro comes equipped with black TRD alloy flow-form wheels and Nitto Terra Grappler tires.
This trail star’s V6 engine gets a thunderous roar from a standard TRD-branded cat-back exhaust. The TRD Pro has updated HVAC controls similar to the Limited, as well as a standard sunroof and Premium Audio with JBL speakers and Clari-FiTM technology to enhance digital audio formats.
TRD Pro will be available in the special exterior color Solar Octane for 2023, in addition to the standard colors Black, White, and Magnetic Gray Metallic.

The fifth-generation 4Runner has enough capacity for the entire family, with seating for up to seven people. All 2023 4Runner models include Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD) and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and the Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.
The Advanced Airbag System for the driver and front passenger, front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and all-row, roll-sensing side curtain airbags are all standard. Rear Occupancy Alert is now standard on all 2023 4Runner models. When the system’s operating conditions are satisfied, the system reminds the driver to check the back seat for a kid or pet before departing the car, as its name implies.
Space for people and gear.
4Runner provides a variety of alternatives for transporting stuff. When the second-row seats are folded down, the cargo compartment expands to 47.2 cubic feet. If you’re just taking two people on the road or trail, the second seat can be folded down to reveal a massive 89.7 cu.-ft. cargo compartment. The second-row seats may be folded flat without removing the headrests.
Third-row seating is offered in the 4Runner SR5 and Limited grades, with a split 50:50 seat that folds flat. The 40:20:40 second-row seat includes a one-touch walk-in capability for simple access to the third row when fitted. Using separate one-touch levers, the seats may be folded from the side or from the back. Individually recline up to 16 degrees in four levels in the second-row seats, which have a central armrest.
